@OW_Panthers Baseball advances to sixth-straight Skyline Conference finals

No. 2 Old Westbury moves on to Championship Sunday against No. 3 Farmingdale State

PATCHOGUE, NY - (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - After a 6-5 walk-off win over the top-seeded St. Joseph's (L.I.) Golden Eagles (20-16) Saturday morning, No. 2 Old Westbury (24-8) is set to make its sixth-consecutive trip to the Skyline Conference Baseball Finals.  Old Westbury will bring its 13-game winning streak into Sunday's final at 11 a.m. against the No. 3 Farmingdale State Rams (18-16) from Gregg Alfano Field in Patchogue, New York.  The 13-game streak is believed to be a program record.

Old Westbury claimed the first-round final over the Rams on May 1 with a 2-1 decision to open the double-elimination tournament.  Since the yesterday's loss, Farmingdale State earned 7-3 and 10-5 wins today against No. 4 Maritime and St. Joseph's (L.I.), respectively.

Old Westbury right-handed reliever Nick Dorcean (3-1, 1 IP, 2 BB, 2 K) took over for lefty reliever Nick Schoen in the ninth inning after the southpaw allowed a leadoff single to Nick Girardi (3-for-5, RBI, SB).  Dorcean uncorked a wild pitch and issued two walks to load the bases.  James Terry then dropped down a sacrifice bunt to score Girardi to break a 4-4 tie.

Old Westbury pinch hitter Jake Schwartz ripped a one-out double down the left field line to start Old Westbury's comeback in the bottom of the ninth.  Jesse Matos pinch ran for Schwartz at second, and scored off pinch hitter Robert Crocitto's RBI single to knot the game at 5-5.  Right-hander reliever Michael Catanzaro then took over for starting righty Josh Outsen (5-2, 8.1 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 K), inducing a ground out to Jacob Coners, which advanced pinch runner Tyler Roberts to second.  Eddie Hernandez then stepped to the plate to deliver a two-out walk-off single to score Roberts for the game-winning run.

St. Joseph's (L.I.) threatened in the first inning with Anthony Bonilla's (1-for-5, 2 R, SB) leadoff double to right center off Panther starting left-hander Caleb Olesen (6 IP, 11 H, 4 R, 3 ER, BB, K).  James Nakashian's sacrifice bunt moved Bonilla to third before Joseph Calabrese (3-for-5, RBI) broke the scoring ice with a RBI single.

Olesen scattered four hits over the next two innings, but was able to recover by stranding a pair of runners in each frame.

Tommy Ziegen (2-for-4, R) broke the Panthers into the hit column with a leadoff double to get things going in the third inning.  Brandon Stein then reached on a fielder's choice, and moved to second off a throwing error by Outsen, which allowed Ziegen to come around to score the game-tying run.  Joey Walsh then dropped down a sacrifice bunt that allowed Stein to score off a throwing error by catcher Terry for a 2-1 Panther lead.

The Golden Eagles opened the fourth with back-to-back singles.  Two batters later, Nakashian's infield grounder scored Ryan Walsh (3-for-5, R) before Girardi followed with a single to give St. Joseph's (L.I.) a 3-2 lead.

St. Joseph's (L.I.) doubled its advantage in the sixth off an error by shortstop Ziegen that scored Joseph Lynn (4-for-5, R, SB) from second.  Lynn reached base with a one-out single and stole second before scoring for a 4-2 lead.

Old Westbury made it a one-run game in the sixth when Michael Cardino scored off a fielder's choice to make it a 4-3 game.  Cardino reached on an error by third baseman Calabrese, advanced to second off Nick Yip's single, and moved to third on a fly out by Christian Faust (0-for-1, 3 BB) before scoring off Dean Sheridan's infield hit.

The Panthers got even in the eighth off Sheridan's game-tying single to score pinch runner Joemar Wilson from first, which included a fielding error by center fielder Walsh.
